Pennsylvania backed Kerry (Democratic) in the 2004 presidential election, casting 21 electoral votes for the ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: George W. Bush (Republican) won nationally, while Pennsylvania had backed a different ticket.

Pennsylvania stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1988.
