Pennsylvania in 2008

The 2008 contest saw Pennsylvania line up behind Obama, delivering 21 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Pennsylvania with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Pennsylvania was part of his column.

Pennsylvania stayed in the Democratic column for the 6th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1988. The region divided — Ohio, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York joined Pennsylvania for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Pennsylvania has backed the Republican party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Barack Obama finished with 365 of the 538 electoral votes to John McCain's 173. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 52.93% of the ballots cast.
