In 2000, Pennsylvania awarded its 23 electoral votes to Gore of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: George W. Bush (Republican) won nationally, while Pennsylvania had backed a different ticket.

Pennsylvania stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1988. The region divided — Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York joined Pennsylvania for the Democratic ticket, while Ohio and West Virginia did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Pennsylvania has backed the Republican party more than any other — 26 times in all.
