Pennsylvania in 1984

The 1984 contest saw Pennsylvania line up behind Reagan, delivering 25 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Pennsylvania with the eventual winner: Ronald Reagan went on to take the presidency, and Pennsylvania was part of his column.

Pennsylvania stayed in the Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1980. Pennsylvania did not move alone — neighboring Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York broke the same way in 1984. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Pennsylvania has backed the Republican party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.

Nationally, Ronald Reagan finished with 525 of the 538 electoral votes to Walter Mondale's 13. Ronald Reagan led the national popular vote with 58.77% of the ballots cast.
