Franklin D. Roosevelt and the 1944 map
Roosevelt won an unprecedented fourth term during World War II, defeating New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey. The war and Roosevelt's wartime leadership made changing presidents unthinkable to most Americans; his slogan was effectively 'Don't change horses midstream.' Harry S. Truman replaced Henry Wallace as VP, a decision of enormous historical consequence. FDR died in April 1945, just three months into his fourth term, leaving Truman to lead the country to victory and into the atomic age.

Only fourth-term presidency; FDR died 83 days later; Truman chosen as VP sealed the atomic bomb decision
