Massachusetts backed Roosevelt (Democratic) in the 1944 presidential election, casting 16 electoral votes for the ticket. Massachusetts ended up on the winning side — Franklin D. Roosevelt captured the White House that year.

It marked the 4th consecutive election in which Massachusetts backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1932. The region divided — Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Hampshire joined Massachusetts for the Democratic ticket, while Vermont did not. Across the 60 presidential elections Massachusetts has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times).
