Virginia in 1944

The 1944 contest saw Virginia line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Virginia with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Virginia was part of his column.

Virginia stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. Virginia did not move alone — neighboring North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland broke the same way in 1944. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 432 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 99. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 53.39% of the ballots cast.
