Montana in 1944

The 1944 contest saw Montana line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Montana with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Montana was part of his column.

Montana stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Idaho and Wyoming joined Montana for the Democratic ticket, while South Dakota and North Dakota did not. Over its 34 recorded presidential cycles, Montana has backed the Republican party more than any other — 22 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 432 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 99. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 53.39% of the ballots cast.
