Utah in 1944

The 1944 contest saw Utah line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Utah with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Utah was part of his column.

Utah stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. Utah did not move alone — neighboring Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada broke the same way in 1944. Over its 33 recorded presidential cycles, Utah has backed the Republican party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 432 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 99. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 53.39% of the ballots cast.
