The 2012 contest saw Illinois line up behind Obama, delivering 20 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Illinois ended up on the winning side — Barack Obama captured the White House that year.

It marked the 6th consecutive election in which Illinois backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1992. The region divided — Wisconsin and Iowa joined Illinois for the Democratic ticket, while Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana did not. Across the 53 presidential elections Illinois has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (26 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Barack Obama took 332 of the 538 electoral votes, against Mitt Romney's 206. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 51.06% of the ballots cast.
