Illinois backed Obama (Democratic) in the 2008 presidential election, casting 21 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Illinois with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Illinois was part of his column.

Illinois stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1992.
