Illinois backed Clinton (Democratic) in the 1996 presidential election, casting 22 electoral votes for the ticket. Illinois ended up on the winning side — Bill Clinton captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Illinois backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1992. The region divided — Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, and Kentucky joined Illinois for the Democratic ticket, while Indiana did not.
