The 2000 contest saw Illinois line up behind Gore, delivering 22 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: George W. Bush (Republican) won nationally, while Illinois had backed a different ticket.

Illinois stayed in the Democratic column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1992. The region divided — Wisconsin and Iowa joined Illinois for the Democratic ticket, while Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Illinois has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 26 times in all.
