2004
What happened in Illinois, 2004
In 2004, Illinois awarded its 21 electoral votes to Kerry of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: George W. Bush (Republican) won nationally, while Illinois had backed a different ticket.
Illinois stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1992. The region divided — Wisconsin joined Illinois for the Democratic ticket, while Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Illinois has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, George W. Bush finished with 286 of the 538 electoral votes to John Kerry's 251. George W. Bush led the national popular vote with 50.73% of the ballots cast.
