Iowa in 1936
The 1936 contest saw Iowa line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Iowa with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Iowa was part of his column.
Iowa stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. Iowa did not move alone — neighboring Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota broke the same way in 1936. Over its 47 recorded presidential cycles, Iowa has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 523 of the 531 electoral votes to Alf Landon's 8. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 60.8% of the ballots cast.
