The 1948 contest saw Iowa line up behind Truman, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Iowa ended up on the winning side — Harry S. Truman captured the White House that year.

Truman's win closed out Iowa's 2-election run of voting Republican. The region divided — Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri joined Iowa for the Democratic ticket, while Nebraska and South Dakota did not. Across the 47 presidential elections Iowa has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (32 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

In the national count, Harry S. Truman took 303 of the 531 electoral votes, against Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
