What happened in Iowa, 1952

In 1952, Iowa awarded its 10 electoral votes to Eisenhower of the Republican party. That placed Iowa with the eventual winner: Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to take the presidency, and Iowa was part of his column.

The result flipped Iowa away from the Democratic it had supported in 1948. Iowa did not move alone — neighboring Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota broke the same way in 1952. Over its 47 recorded presidential cycles, Iowa has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 442 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 89. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 55.18% of the ballots cast.
