Iowa stayed in the Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1952. The region divided — Wisconsin, Illinois, Nebraska, and South Dakota joined Iowa for the Republican ticket, while Minnesota and Missouri did not. Over its 47 recorded presidential cycles, Iowa has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
