What happened in Missouri, 1932

In 1932, Missouri awarded its 15 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Democratic party. That placed Missouri with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Missouri was part of his column.

The result flipped Missouri away from the Republican it had supported in 1928. Missouri did not move alone — neighboring Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska broke the same way in 1932. Over its 52 recorded presidential cycles, Missouri has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 472 of the 531 electoral votes to Herbert Hoover's 59. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 57.41% of the ballots cast.
