Missouri backed Roosevelt (Democratic) in the 1936 presidential election, casting 15 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Missouri with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Missouri was part of his column.

Missouri stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska joined Missouri for the Democratic ticket, while Kansas did not.
