Missouri in 1916

The 1916 contest saw Missouri line up behind Wilson, delivering 18 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Missouri with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Missouri was part of his column.

Missouri stayed in the Democratic column for the 12th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1872. The region divided — Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska joined Missouri for the Democratic ticket, while Iowa and Illinois did not. Over its 52 recorded presidential cycles, Missouri has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 277 of the 531 electoral votes to Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
