Minnesota in 2016

The 2016 contest saw Minnesota line up behind Clinton, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Donald Trump (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Minnesota among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 16th consecutive election in which Minnesota backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1956. It stood apart from its neighbors: North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin went the other way that year. Across the 43 presidential elections Minnesota has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Donald Trump took 304 of the 538 electoral votes, against Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
