In 1996, Minnesota awarded its 10 electoral votes to Clinton of the Democratic party. Minnesota ended up on the winning side — Bill Clinton captured the White House that year.

It marked the 11th consecutive election in which Minnesota backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1956. The region divided — Iowa and Wisconsin joined Minnesota for the Democratic ticket, while North Dakota and South Dakota did not.
