Minnesota backed Obama (Democratic) in the 2012 presidential election, casting 10 electoral votes for the ticket. Minnesota ended up on the winning side — Barack Obama captured the White House that year.

It marked the 15th consecutive election in which Minnesota backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1956. The region divided — Iowa and Wisconsin joined Minnesota for the Democratic ticket, while North Dakota and South Dakota did not.
