The 2004 contest saw Minnesota line up behind Kerry, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: George W. Bush (Republican) won nationally, while Minnesota had backed a different ticket.

Minnesota stayed in the Democratic column for the 13th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1956. The region divided — Wisconsin joined Minnesota for the Democratic ticket, while North Dakota, South Dakota, and Iowa did not. Over its 43 recorded presidential cycles, Minnesota has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all.
