In 2008, Minnesota awarded its 10 electoral votes to Obama of the Democratic party. That placed Minnesota with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Minnesota was part of his column.

Minnesota stayed in the Democratic column for the 14th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1956. The region divided — Iowa and Wisconsin joined Minnesota for the Democratic ticket, while North Dakota and South Dakota did not.
