In 2016, Connecticut awarded its 7 electoral votes to Clinton of the Democratic party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Donald Trump (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Connecticut among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 7th consecutive election in which Connecticut backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1992. Connecticut did not move alone — neighboring New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island broke the same way in 2016. Across the 60 presidential elections Connecticut has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (24 times). In the national count, Donald Trump took 304 of the 538 electoral votes, against Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
