2008
Reading the 2008 result in Connecticut
Connecticut backed Obama (Democratic) in the 2008 presidential election, casting 7 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Connecticut with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Connecticut was part of his column.
Connecticut stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1992. Connecticut did not move alone — neighboring New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island broke the same way in 2008. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Connecticut has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Barack Obama finished with 365 of the 538 electoral votes to John McCain's 173. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 52.93% of the ballots cast.
