2004
What happened in Connecticut, 2004
In 2004, Connecticut awarded its 7 electoral votes to Kerry of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: George W. Bush (Republican) won nationally, while Connecticut had backed a different ticket.
Connecticut stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1992. Connecticut did not move alone — neighboring New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island broke the same way in 2004. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Connecticut has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, George W. Bush finished with 286 of the 538 electoral votes to John Kerry's 251. George W. Bush led the national popular vote with 50.73% of the ballots cast.
