In 2012, Ohio awarded its 18 electoral votes to Obama of the Democratic party. Ohio ended up on the winning side — Barack Obama captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Ohio backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 2008. The region divided — Michigan and Pennsylvania joined Ohio for the Democratic ticket, while Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia did not. Across the 56 presidential elections Ohio has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (30 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Barack Obama took 332 of the 538 electoral votes, against Mitt Romney's 206. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 51.06% of the ballots cast.
