Ohio in 2008

The 2008 contest saw Ohio line up behind Obama, delivering 20 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Ohio with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Ohio was part of his column.

The result flipped Ohio away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 2 cycles. The region divided — Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania joined Ohio for the Democratic ticket, while Kentucky and West Virginia did not. Over its 56 recorded presidential cycles, Ohio has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Barack Obama finished with 365 of the 538 electoral votes to John McCain's 173. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 52.93% of the ballots cast.
