The 1996 contest saw Ohio line up behind Clinton, delivering 21 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Ohio ended up on the winning side — Bill Clinton captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Ohio backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1992. The region divided — Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania joined Ohio for the Democratic ticket, while Indiana did not. Across the 56 presidential elections Ohio has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (30 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Bill Clinton took 379 of the 538 electoral votes, against Bob Dole's 159. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 49.23% of the ballots cast.
