What happened in Ohio, 2000

In 2000, Ohio awarded its 21 electoral votes to Bush of the Republican party. That placed Ohio with the eventual winner: George W. Bush went on to take the presidency, and Ohio was part of his column.

The result flipped Ohio away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 2 cycles. The region divided — Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia joined Ohio for the Republican ticket, while Michigan and Pennsylvania did not. Over its 56 recorded presidential cycles, Ohio has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, George W. Bush finished with 271 of the 538 electoral votes to Al Gore's 266. Though George W. Bush won the Electoral College, Al Gore drew more of the national popular vote — 48.38% to 47.87%.
