In 1984, Minnesota awarded its 10 electoral votes to Mondale of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Ronald Reagan (Republican) won nationally, while Minnesota had backed a different ticket.

Minnesota stayed in the Democratic column for the 8th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1956. It stood apart from its neighbors: North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin went the other way that year.
