The 2000 contest saw Missouri line up behind Bush, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Missouri ended up on the winning side — George W. Bush captured the White House that year.

Bush's win closed out Missouri's 2-election run of voting Democratic. The region divided — Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska joined Missouri for the Republican ticket, while Iowa and Illinois did not. Across the 52 presidential elections Missouri has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (33 times). In the national count, George W. Bush took 271 of the 538 electoral votes, against Al Gore's 266. Though George W. Bush won the Electoral College, Al Gore drew more of the national popular vote — 48.38% to 47.87%.
