What happened in Missouri, 1992

In 1992, Missouri awarded its 11 electoral votes to Clinton of the Democratic party. That placed Missouri with the eventual winner: Bill Clinton went on to take the presidency, and Missouri was part of his column.

The result flipped Missouri away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 3 cycles. The region divided — Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas joined Missouri for the Democratic ticket, while Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska did not. Over its 52 recorded presidential cycles, Missouri has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Bill Clinton finished with 370 of the 538 electoral votes to George H. W. Bush's 168. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 43.01% of the ballots cast.
