The 2012 contest saw Missouri line up behind Romney, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Barack Obama (Democratic) won nationally, while Missouri had backed a different ticket.

Missouri stayed in the Republican column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 2000. The region divided — Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska joined Missouri for the Republican ticket, while Iowa and Illinois did not. Over its 52 recorded presidential cycles, Missouri has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Barack Obama finished with 332 of the 538 electoral votes to Mitt Romney's 206. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 51.06% of the ballots cast.
