What happened in Pennsylvania, 1964

In 1964, Pennsylvania awarded its 29 electoral votes to Johnson of the Democratic party. That placed Pennsylvania with the eventual winner: Lyndon B. Johnson went on to take the presidency, and Pennsylvania was part of his column.

Pennsylvania stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1960. Pennsylvania did not move alone — neighboring Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York broke the same way in 1964. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Pennsylvania has backed the Republican party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Lyndon B. Johnson finished with 486 of the 538 electoral votes to Barry Goldwater's 52. Lyndon B. Johnson led the national popular vote with 61.05% of the ballots cast.
