North Carolina in 1948

The 1948 contest saw North Carolina line up behind Truman, delivering 14 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed North Carolina with the eventual winner: Harry S. Truman went on to take the presidency, and North Carolina was part of his column.

North Carolina stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia joined North Carolina for the Democratic ticket, while South Carolina did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Harry S. Truman finished with 303 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
