In 1964, North Carolina awarded its 13 electoral votes to Johnson of the Democratic party. That placed North Carolina with the eventual winner: Lyndon B. Johnson went on to take the presidency, and North Carolina was part of his column.

North Carolina stayed in the Democratic column for the 9th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Virginia and Tennessee joined North Carolina for the Democratic ticket, while Georgia and South Carolina did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
