1960
North Carolina in 1960
The 1960 contest saw North Carolina line up behind Kennedy, delivering 14 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed North Carolina with the eventual winner: John F. Kennedy went on to take the presidency, and North Carolina was part of his column.
North Carolina stayed in the Democratic column for the 8th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Georgia and South Carolina joined North Carolina for the Democratic ticket, while Virginia and Tennessee did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
Nationally, John F. Kennedy finished with 303 of the 537 electoral votes to Richard Nixon's 219. John F. Kennedy led the national popular vote with 49.72% of the ballots cast.
