1928
What happened in North Carolina, 1928
In 1928, North Carolina awarded its 12 electoral votes to Hoover of the Republican party. That placed North Carolina with the eventual winner: Herbert Hoover went on to take the presidency, and North Carolina was part of his column.
The result flipped North Carolina away from the Democratic it had supported in 1924. The region divided — Virginia and Tennessee joined North Carolina for the Republican ticket, while Georgia and South Carolina did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.
Nationally, Herbert Hoover finished with 444 of the 531 electoral votes to Al Smith's 87. Herbert Hoover led the national popular vote with 58.21% of the ballots cast.
