The 1936 contest saw North Carolina line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 13 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. North Carolina ended up on the winning side — Franklin D. Roosevelt captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which North Carolina backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1932. North Carolina did not move alone — neighboring Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina broke the same way in 1936. Across the 58 presidential elections North Carolina has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (32 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

In the national count, Franklin D. Roosevelt took 523 of the 531 electoral votes, against Alf Landon's 8. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 60.8% of the ballots cast.
