Delaware in 1948

The 1948 contest saw Delaware line up behind Dewey, delivering 3 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Harry S. Truman (Democratic) won nationally, while Delaware had backed a different ticket.

Delaware stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1940. Delaware did not move alone — neighboring Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey broke the same way in 1948. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Delaware has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Harry S. Truman finished with 303 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
