In 1964, Delaware awarded its 3 electoral votes to Johnson of the Democratic party. That placed Delaware with the eventual winner: Lyndon B. Johnson went on to take the presidency, and Delaware was part of his column.

Delaware stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1960. Delaware did not move alone — neighboring Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey broke the same way in 1964. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Delaware has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
