What happened in Delaware, 1940

In 1940, Delaware awarded its 3 electoral votes to Willkie of the Republican party. The presidency went elsewhere: Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democratic) won nationally, while Delaware had backed a different ticket.

The result flipped Delaware away from the Democratic it had supported in 1936. It stood apart from its neighbors: Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey went the other way that year. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Delaware has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 449 of the 531 electoral votes to Wendell Willkie's 82. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 54.74% of the ballots cast.
