1932
Reading the 1932 result in Delaware
Delaware backed Hoover (Republican) in the 1932 presidential election, casting 3 electoral votes for the ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Delaware among the states he did not carry.
It marked the 5th consecutive election in which Delaware backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1916. The region divided — Pennsylvania joined Delaware for the Republican ticket, while Maryland and New Jersey did not. Across the 60 presidential elections Delaware has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
In the national count, Franklin D. Roosevelt took 472 of the 531 electoral votes, against Herbert Hoover's 59. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 57.41% of the ballots cast.
