What happened in Virginia, 1960

In 1960, Virginia awarded its 12 electoral votes to Nixon of the Republican party. The presidency went elsewhere: John F. Kennedy (Democratic) won nationally, while Virginia had backed a different ticket.

Virginia stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1952. The region divided — Tennessee joined Virginia for the Republican ticket, while North Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, John F. Kennedy finished with 303 of the 537 electoral votes to Richard Nixon's 219. John F. Kennedy led the national popular vote with 49.72% of the ballots cast.
