1924
What happened in Virginia, 1924
In 1924, Virginia awarded its 12 electoral votes to Davis of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Calvin Coolidge (Republican) won nationally, while Virginia had backed a different ticket.
Virginia stayed in the Democratic column for the 14th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1872. The region divided — North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia and Maryland did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.
Nationally, Calvin Coolidge finished with 382 of the 531 electoral votes to John W. Davis's 136. Calvin Coolidge led the national popular vote with 54.04% of the ballots cast.
