Virginia in 1932

The 1932 contest saw Virginia line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Virginia ended up on the winning side — Franklin D. Roosevelt captured the White House that year.

The result flipped Virginia away from the Republican it had supported in 1928. Virginia did not move alone — neighboring North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland broke the same way in 1932. Across the 58 presidential elections Virginia has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (33 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

In the national count, Franklin D. Roosevelt took 472 of the 531 electoral votes, against Herbert Hoover's 59. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 57.41% of the ballots cast.
